Cemeteries and graveyards are part of our landscape and communities. They are the monuments people have created to mark the place where a family member, friend, or neighbor was laid to rest. They are also wonderful primary sources that can tell us much about our history.
Some Tips for Using Cemeteries with Students
Ask permission to visit from the custodian of the cemetery
Take nothing with you and leave nothing behind
Bring sketch pads or cameras, but please don’t make gravestone rubbings (in some states making rubbings is illegal)
Bring a water bottle—spraying a little water on the stone can make it easier to read
Remember that you are walking on sacred ground
